The Metagene was the source of metahuman powers. Planted within normal humans by Helspont, the metagene would give humans what was commonly coined as "superpowers". The DNA within this gene often lies dormant within the human until a moment of physiological stress causes it to start producing proteins, or in other words, activate the hidden genetic potential. The metagene then grants the human pjowers depending on the stress. The most profound example of this was that of Barry Allen, to counteract his getting struck by lightning, the dormant metagene connected him to the Speed Force and granted him lightning based superspeed.
